Stage Fright Rescue

Welcome to Stage Fright Rescue.

You’ve probably heard plenty of advice about stage fright:

Relax.

Take a deep breath.

Be confident.

Don’t think about it.

But what happens when you know all of that—and your nerves still show up?

In this course, we’re going to approach stage fright differently.

Rather than treating stage fright as one problem with one solution, you’ll explore five different emotional patterns that can appear around performance.

You may recognise yourself immediately in one. You may discover that several show up at different times.

The important question isn’t simply:

“How do I stop being nervous?”

It’s:

“What happens to me when I get nervous—and what can I do when it happens?”

The Five Performance Patterns

As you move through the course, you’ll meet:

The Worrier“What if something goes wrong?”

The Fearful Performer“What will they think of me?”

The Frustrated Artist“That wasn’t good enough.”

The Disappointed Singer“Why can everyone else do this except me?”

The Performer Who Tries Too Hard“I HAVE to get this right.”

These patterns aren’t diagnoses or fixed personality types. Think of them as different lenses through which you can begin recognising your own experience of performance nerves.

Learn How to Handle Your Nerves

Recognition is only part of the course.

You’ll also explore simple Jin Shin Jyutsu self-help techniques that you can try when performance nerves appear.

Some may be useful before you perform, when anticipation starts building.

Some can be explored during a performance, when you need something discreet and practical.

Others can support you afterwards, when frustration, disappointment or self-criticism threaten to take over.

As you work through the course, notice which approaches seem most useful for you.

Build Your Stage Fright Rescue Kit

By the end of the course, you’ll have explored different ways of responding to different kinds of performance nerves.

Your aim is to build your own Stage Fright Rescue Kit: a collection of practical techniques you can return to before auditions, examinations, competitions, concerts and other performances.

You don’t need to remember everything.

You don’t need every technique to work equally well for you.

And you don’t need to become someone who never gets nervous.

You’re here to discover what you can do when the nerves show up.

Take your time with the course, try the techniques for yourself, and pay attention to what you notice.

Let’s begin.

Stage Fright Rescue is an educational course for performers. It is not intended to diagnose, treat or cure anxiety or any mental health condition, or to replace professional medical, psychological or mental health care.
