How Many Sessions Do You Need Before a Christmas or Chinese New Year Performance? A Realistic Timeline

Stepping stones with a blue and green sound-wave ribbon leading to two glowing lights on the horizon.

Nobody can give you an exact number without hearing your voice. Someone singing one familiar carol with a voice that behaves needs a different plan from someone whose throat tightens on the high note, and both differ from someone leading a ten-song set.

Below is a way to plan, with ranges you can adjust after a first session. Treat them as planning guides, with no promise of results attached.

What decides the number

  1. How much time you have. More weeks mean smaller steps and more room to practise between sessions.
  2. What you’re singing. One song is a smaller job than a set, and a song that sits comfortably in your range is easier than one that reaches for notes you rarely use.
  3. What your voice does now. If it works well in some settings and tightens, cracks or tires in others, that needs more attention than a voice with no particular trouble.
  4. How much you can practise. Ten short minutes on most days often beats one long weekend session.
  5. How you feel when people are listening. A performance includes what your voice does when someone is watching, so practising in front of another person counts.

A planning guide

Time before your event Situation A sensible starting plan
6 to 8 weeks One song, voice mostly reliable A first session, then follow-ups every one to two weeks, with short practice in between
3 to 4 weeks One song, voice mostly reliable A first session, then weekly follow-ups
2 weeks or less One song A first session, then one or two follow-ups (see our guide to preparing in two weeks)
Any A recurring problem (tightness, cracking, tiring) or a long set More time. The eight-session package may suit you, and an ENT visit comes first if hoarseness or pain persists

These are ranges to discuss with your coach. They describe how a plan could look, and they don’t predict what will happen.

Why the first session comes first

A first session with Ms Grace Ng is 60 minutes (S$150), with no package attached. Private lessons with our associate teachers range from S$45-$90. Explore your options here. We listen to what your voice does, look for what changes it, and finish with a clear recommendation for the next step, which may be coaching, rest, a medical assessment or another professional. That recommendation answers the “how many” question for your voice and your date.

Eight-session and sixteen-session packages are available if you choose to continue. You don’t need to buy one first.

Counting back from your date

Christmas Day falls on Friday 25 December 2026, and Chinese New Year on Saturday 6 February 2027. Count back from your actual event, since a company dinner on 11 December runs on a different clock from a family reunion on 5 February.

For an event on 18 December, eight weeks back is 23 October. For a reunion dinner on 5 February, six weeks back is 25 December, so your Chinese New Year preparation overlaps with the Christmas break, and it helps to book sessions around it.

Signs you’re on track

After each session, ask yourself three things:

  • Can I repeat the change that helped?
  • Does it hold when I stand, sing with the backing track, and sing for another person?
  • Is my practice short and regular?

A change is a clue, and the real test is whether it holds up when the situation gets harder.

Signs you may need more time

  • The same spot tightens or cracks every time, even after you’ve tried changes.
  • Your voice gets worse as you practise.
  • You avoid practising because it feels uncomfortable.

If you have persistent hoarseness, pain or a sudden change in your voice, see an ENT doctor before more voice work. Vocalogy provides voice training and coaching, and we don’t diagnose or treat medical voice disorders.

Start with one session

If you’re not sure how much time you need, a first session will tell you more than any chart. Message us on WhatsApp to book and tell us your event date.
