Karaoke Night Without a Sore Throat: Simple Habits That Protect Your Voice

A microphone in a softly lit room with a glass of water, and a blue and green sound ribbon rising from it.

The festive season brings plenty of karaoke: office parties, family gatherings, Chinese New Year get-togethers. Singing for hours is fun and can leave your voice tired the next day. A few habits make a difference.

Before you go

  • Drink water through the day, not only on arrival.
  • Go easy on your voice earlier in the day. Talking loudly over noise counts too.
  • Do a gentle warm-up. A few minutes of easy sounds is enough.
  • Pick your songs in advance, so you can choose ones that sit in a comfortable range.

During the night

  • Start with comfortable songs. Save the demanding ones for when you’re warm.
  • Use the key change button. Most karaoke systems have one, and it’s worth using.
  • You don’t need to be loud. With a microphone, hold it at a steady distance so you don’t have to push.
  • Take breaks. Avoid singing several demanding songs back to back.
  • Sip water between songs. Air-conditioned rooms can feel dry.
  • Avoid shouting over the music. If you can’t hear yourself, ask for the volume to be adjusted.

Notice effort

If you feel yourself pushing, tightening, or reaching, change something: a lower key, a shorter song, or a turn-off. A voice that feels easy tends to last longer.

Spread it out over Chinese New Year

If you’re singing at several gatherings, give your voice rest days between them. Chinese New Year falls on 6 February 2027, and the days around it tend to be busy.

After karaoke

  • Rest your voice the next day and speak at a normal volume.
  • Drink water and sleep well.
  • Don’t judge the evening by how you sound the morning after.

Signs to stop

If your voice feels scratchy, sore or hoarse, stop singing for the night. If hoarseness or pain lasts more than a few weeks, or your voice changes suddenly, see an ENT doctor. Vocalogy provides voice training and coaching, and we don’t diagnose or treat medical voice disorders. If your voice cracks every time

Practising habits helps, and a crack at the move between chest and head voice may need direct attention. Our small-group Voice Crack Workshop runs on Saturday, 23 January 2027, 2:00 to 3:00 pm, in person in Singapore (3 to 6 participants, minimum 3, S$78 per person). Bring the song that exposes the problem, and try different approaches to the register change. Message us on WhatsApp to reserve a spot.

If you can’t attend or live outside Singapore, the online Voice Crack Toolkit (7 short lessons, around 20 minutes in total) explores three approaches: Voice Crack Toolkit.
